What Exactly is a ‘Futures Contract’? http://insigniafutures.com/what-exactly-is-a-futures-contract/ Thu, 27 Apr 2017 19:25:39 +0000 http://insigniafutures.com/?p=27689 The post What Exactly is a ‘Futures Contract’? appeared first on Insignia Futures & Options.

Have you ever wondered, “What exactly is a futures contract?”.

Many investors new to futures trading ask this question – here’s the answer…

According the the CME Group (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) – the world’s largest futures exchange, the definition of a futures contract is as follows…

Forward and futures contracts are financial instruments that allow market participants to offset or assume the risk of a price change of an asset over time.

A futures contract is distinct from a forward contract in two important ways: first, a futures contract is a legally binding agreement to buy or sell a standardized asset on a specific date or during a specific month. Second, this transaction is facilitated through a futures exchange.

The fact that futures contracts are standardized and exchange-traded makes these instruments indispensable to commodity producers, consumers, traders and investors.

The CME Group has put together a short video on the Definition of a Futures Contact.  I invite you to check it out as it’s very informative.

Are you interested in trading futures but not sure how to get started?

Many our clients were new to futures trading when they first opened their futures trading account with Insignia Futures & Options.

Many of these clients had experience in trading stocks and/or mutual funds and were interested in trading stock index futures such as the S&P 500 and Dow Jones; markets they were familiar with.

The CME Group (Chicago Mercantile Exchange), the world’s largest futures exchange, offers a complete – introductory, online course on trading equity index futures and options.

If you were asked to picture trading the U.S. stock market, what comes to mind? You may think of trading shares of companies like Apple, ExxonMobil or Disney.  But what if there was another way to express your views and gain broad-based exposure to U.S. equities – without trading each individual stock? One alternative is equity index futures and options. With a single transaction, investors can use these index-based contracts to manage risk or seek profits based on whether they think the stock market will rise or fall.  Learn the basics of these contracts, including what they are, how they’re built and how many ways you can use them.

…CME Group

The course is outlined in easy to understand sections including…

  • What is an Index Future?
  • Discover Equity Index Value & Price
  • Understanding Equity Index Daily & Final Settlement
  • The Importance of Trading Volume
  • Who Trades Equity Index Futures & Options?
  • What is Equity Index Basis?
  • How to Roll and Equity Futures Position Forward
  • Hedging and Risk Management for Equity Index Futures
  • Trading Opportunities in Equity Index Futures & Options
  • Understanding Equity Spreads
  • How to Trade Select Market Sectors

CME to add Monday Weekly Futures Options for Emini S&P 500 http://insigniafutures.com/cme-add-monday-weekly-futures-options-emini-sp-500/ Thu, 09 Mar 2017 16:23:06 +0000 http://insigniafutures.com/?p=27653 The post CME to add Monday Weekly Futures Options for Emini S&P 500 appeared first on Insignia Futures & Options.

The CME Group (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) will be adding Monday Weekly futures options for the Emini S&P 500.

Set to launch on April 3, 2017, futures options traders will now have greater precision and flexibility in controlling risk and/or speculative trading.

The addition of Monday weekly options on the Emini S&P 500 futures contract will provide additional market liquidity, especially during event driven situations such as major economic reports, unemployment reports and national elections.

As an example, following the 2016 U.S. Presidential election, trading volume soared in the Wednesday and Friday weekly options to over 380,000 emini S&P 500 option contracts.

S&P 500 and E-mini S&P 500 Monday Weekly options on futures will be available for trading beginning April 3. The addition of Monday Weekly options provides you with the opportunity to fine-tune your trading strategies, particularly ahead of market-moving events and reports like the upcoming French election. New Monday options will trade like existing Wednesday and Friday Weekly Index options, but they will expire on Mondays.

  • Available on standard and E-mini S&P 500 futures
  • European-style expiration
  • Initial expirations available: April 17, April 24, May 1, May 8; following the initial listing, two expirations will be available at any time

This last video from the CME Group (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) presents a summary of Call & Put futures options.

It explains the differences between Call and Put futures options and how they are used. I highly recommend this video to anyone who is interested in trading futures options.

Options on futures offer market participants a unique set of risk management and investment opportunities and are available across all major asset classes such as interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, agricultural commodities and metals. A wide range of standardized contracts can be used to speculate on bullish or bearish outlooks on price trend or to hedge against adverse price moves in any underlying market, and in volatile or stable environments.
