The 4 major futures market sectors have all rallied this year.
As noted in a Monday article in the Wall Street Journal, the major markets (stocks, bonds, oil, and gold) have all rallied so far in 2016. If we go back to 1983 and look for other years when all four markets showed a positive return through September, then the fourth quarter showed consistent gains in stocks and (especially) gold, with weakness in bonds and oil.
Through September, almost every major asset class rallied, a development that has been getting more attention, including a Monday article in the Wall Street Journal. Year-to-date, stocks, bonds, oil, and gold all showed gains for 2016, last seen in 2010 and then right before the financial collapse in 2007.
Anything that generates comparisons to 2007 tends to trigger questions and this was no different. Going back to the inception of various futures contracts in 1983 and looking for other “everything rallied” years through September, indeed 2016 sticks out in terms of the magnitude of the rallies across all markets.
