The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a popular momentum oscillator used in technical analysis to measure the speed and change of price movements.

As part of the advanced charting tools included in our InsigniaTrader Pro futures trading platform, the RSI helps traders identify overbought or oversold conditions in a market, making it a valuable tool for commodity futures traders.

Understanding the RSI

The RSI is a bounded oscillator that ranges from 0 to 100, typically using a 14-period lookback range. It measures the magnitude of recent price changes to evaluate whether a commodity may be overbought or oversold.

Key Levels in RSI

  • Overbought Zone: RSI > 70
  • Oversold Zone: RSI < 30
  • Neutral Zone: RSI between 30 and 70

These levels can be adjusted based on the trader’s preference and the specific commodity being traded.

Steps to Use RSI in Commodity Futures Trading

The RSI indicator is included in our InsigniaTrader Pro trading platform as part of the advanced charting tools.

  1. Setting Up the RSI Indicator:
  • Open a chart for the futures contract you wish to analyze and add the RSI indicator.
  • The default setting is typically a 14-period RSI, but this can be adjusted depending on your trading strategy and time frame.
  1. Identifying Overbought and Oversold Conditions:
  • When the RSI crosses above 70, the commodity is generally considered overbought. This could signal a potential price reversal or a pullback.
  • When the RSI falls below 30, the commodity is generally considered oversold. This could indicate a potential upward price reversal.
  1. Divergence Analysis:
  • Bullish Divergence: Occurs when the futures price makes a new low but the RSI makes a higher low. This may indicate weakening downward momentum and a potential price increase.
  • Bearish Divergence: Occurs when the futures price makes a new high but the RSI makes a lower high. This may indicate weakening upward momentum and a potential price decrease.
  1. Confirming Signals:
  • Use RSI in conjunction with other technical indicators and chart patterns for confirmation.
  • For instance, a bullish RSI signal near a key support level may provide stronger confirmation of a potential buying opportunity.
  1. Implementing a Trading Strategy:
  • Overbought Strategy: Consider selling or shorting a commodity when the RSI crosses above 70 and then moves back below it, indicating a potential reversal.
  • Oversold Strategy: Consider buying a commodity when the RSI crosses below 30 and then moves back above it, suggesting a possible upward reversal.
  1. Adjusting RSI Periods:
  • For short-term trading, a shorter RSI period (e.g., 7-period) might provide more frequent signals.
  • For long-term trading, a longer RSI period (e.g., 21-period) might offer more reliable signals.

    Practical Example

Using a Canadian Dollar futures chart as an example, we can see that the RSI has crossed above 70 in late December, indicating that the Canadian Dollar might be overbought. We would then wait for the RSI to drop below 70 before making a trade decision, which occurred at arrow #1. Next, we look for confirmation from other indicators such as the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) or support/resistance levels. In this example, we see that the MACD indicator shows bearish crossover a day later at arrow #2 which helps confirm the signal from the RSI indicator. A chart set up like this could indicate an opportunity to short the Canadian Dollar futures.

Conversely, if the RSI falls below 30, indicating generally oversold conditions, and you see a bullish divergence along with the price approaching a support level, it might be a signal to go long.

    Tips for Using RSI

    • Avoid Sole Dependence: Do not rely solely on the RSI. Use it as part of a broader trading strategy.
    • Adjust for Volatility: Customize the RSI settings to match the volatility of the specific commodity you are trading.
    • Stay Informed: Keep abreast of market news and fundamentals, as these can impact price movements beyond what technical indicators may show.

By integrating the RSI into your technical analysis toolkit, you can enhance your ability to identify potential trading opportunities and make more informed decisions in the dynamic world of commodity futures trading.

Our InsigniaTrader Pro futures trading platform includes not only the RSI but also exponential moving averages (EMAs), MACD and a range of other advanced technical analysis tools to support your futures trading strategies.
